SCOTT LANDIS

United Church of Christ

San Diego, CA

This stole was presented to the Rev. Scott Landis by his former congregation, First Plymouth United Church of Christ, Englewood, CO. It was made from the same fabric used to construct  Joseph’s “technicolored dreamcoat” that Scott wore when he played the role of Joseph in the congregation’s summer camp production in 1997. When he later came out as a gay man, that congregation asked him to resign. Scott was subsequently employed in secular work for two years.

Scott was called by Mission Hills United Church of Christ in San Diego in 2004, where he continues to serve as its pastor. He has worn this stole both in gratitude and in pride for overcoming adversity and continuing to embrace his call to ministry.

Contribution Story

This stole was given in celebration of the United Church of Christ's 50th Anniversary.
